Method, sources, and caveats

Sources. Course and enrollment data come from the Berkeleytime GraphQL API, which mirrors Berkeley's SIS Course/Class APIs. Every enrollment figure and every instructor list is then re-scraped from the official UCB Class Schedule (classes.berkeley.edu), and the official figure is the one used — Berkeleytime's instructor lists are incomplete. Appointments come from the ESPM departmental directory.

Co-teaching is judged per offering — two or more instructors of record in the same term. Different instructors in different years is not co-teaching and excludes nothing.

Graduate students are removed from instructor lists before anything else, because Berkeley's schedule lists GSIs in the same field as faculty.

Senate faculty means the Academic Senate professorial series, including the Professor of Teaching (LSOE) series. It excludes lecturers, adjunct professors, emeriti, Professors of the Graduate School (a post-retirement title), Cooperative Extension appointments, and anyone the directory does not list.

Filtering is per offering, not per course — a course keeps its qualifying terms even if another term was taught by someone outside the set.

“Not in ESPM faculty directory” usually means another department, not “not a professor.” Cross-listed courses are often taught from Integrative Biology, Geography, Civil Engineering or elsewhere, and those instructors are absent from the ESPM listing. They are excluded from the Senate set here because this tool can only verify ESPM appointments — treat it as unverified, not as a judgment. Names can be pinned by hand in aliases.json; see the README.

Umbrella course numbers are excluded entirely (98, 99, 197–199, 290, 296–302, 375, 376, 400, 601, 602, Berkeley Connect, 150, 194A). These carry many unrelated sections under one number at varying units, so aggregating them is meaningless.

Cross-listed courses undercount. C- and H-prefixed courses record only students who registered under the ESPM subject code, so their true sizes are larger. They are marked in the table.

Terms still enrolling report partial numbers. Catalog coverage begins Fall 2019.
